The planation surface of Mt Koryong is located in Ryongchon-ri, Sangwon County, North Hwanghae Province.
It formed from the Paleocene-Oligocene period to the early Miocene period. Later, it rose hundreds of metres high by the crustal upheavals, which started from the late Miocene period.
The planation surface at the mountainside is about 280 to 440 metres above sea level.
The Nam River is about 20 metres above sea level. The planation surface is 260-420 metres high from the water surface, which shows its height lifted by the crustal upheavals after its formation.
It sprawls over an area of about 3.4㎢. Its foundation consists of Hwangju group-layer carbonate rock.
There are many funnel-shaped hollows formed by brisk karst action in the area.
The karst hollows and basins are tens to hundreds of metres in diameter and 10 to 15 metres in depth.
The planation surface is dotted with heaps of gravels, which show the traces of the Taedong River in the earliest times.
As it stands higher than the Pyongyang peneplain, another spacious flatland, it is of great academic significance in studying the neotectonic movement, erosion by the Taedong River and the change of its watercourse, and the karst landform.
