Hamhung University of Agriculture has cultivated Tanbaekcho 3, a protein-rich fodder crop, as well as techniques for its cultivation, processing and application, providing a solution to the fodder problem in livestock production.
Teachers and researchers of the university selected a protein-rich fodder crop of good species and conducted research to identify the technical requirements for its cultivation, methods of preventing damages from harmful insects, and economic value, processing characteristics and effectiveness of the fodder.
Tanbaekcho 3, rich in nutritive elements, may help increase the weight ratio of domestic animals without using soybean cake.
With its yield amounting to 50 to 100 tons per hectare, livestock farming bases are likely to increase the output more than three times in the same area of the arable land they use to produce protein-rich fodder.
The new crop grows well even in the saline areas and removes salt by itself. Therefore, its cultivation in tidelands and other saline areas may raise the rate of soil utility.
Highly resistant to low temperature, it can be used as green fodder for domestic animals in springtime.
It has been registered as a national sci-tech achievement in recognition of its contribution to the country’s animal husbandry.
