The Natural History Museum located at the scenic foot of Mt Taesong is a magnet for working people and schoolchildren in Pyongyang.
The museum serves as a unique base for disseminating comprehensive scientific knowledge about the history of the Earth, origin of life, animals and plants.
It has four floors: The ground floor is dedicated to outer space and extinct organisms, the first floor to animals, the second floor to animals and plants, and the third floor to gift animals and plants, exhibits and e-books.
The hall of outer space shows information about over ten objects, such as the evolution of outer space, formation of the solar system, the Sun’s impact on the Earth, and times and dates, which are displayed by means of fluorescent lights and other devices.
Eye-catchers are the planetarium, where visitors can view the formation of the Earth, movements of the planets in the solar system and constellations in the night sky with the help of projectors, and the full-length floor screen that makes viewers feel as if they were looking down on the Earth from space.
A diorama showing magma and the outer layer of the Earth gives a better understanding of the primitive Earth. The hall of extinct organisms houses models and diagrams of more than 90 objects explaining the relationship between the Earth’s environment and living things, appearance of the first multicellular organism, mammoth fossil and birth of human race.
In addition, the dinosaur park, where several dummy dinosaurs move shouting and foraging for food, and the large LED floor screen displaying the real-life marine environment in the Cenozoic era give visitors first-hand experience and knowledge.
At the halls of animals and plants, they can see herbarium and stuffed animals that are put on display in a categorical and systematic way. LED TV screens and touch-screen computers are also available to provide a wide range of knowledge related to the species, ecological characteristics, distribution and protection of the Earth’s fauna and flora.
The museum was opened to the public in July Juche 105 (2016).
