Successes in Irrigation Followed Up

Successes in irrigation have been made one after another in the DPRK, stepping up socialist rural rejuvenation.

According to data available, this year irrigation facilities for over 60 000 hectares of dry fields have been renovated with main emphasis on the areas prone to drought, more than 2 100 irrigation facilities built and expanded, and more than 16 700-km waterways built or repaired, with the result that more than 230 000 hectares of paddy and non-paddy fields have been irrigated.

The irrigation construction which started shortly after its national liberation in August 1945, had to be suspended due to the Korean war (June 1950-July 1953) unleashed by the US imperialists.

In May Juche 45 (1956), the Korean people completed the large-scale Phyongnam irrigation project with well-regulated intake, drainage, waste water recycle and circular irrigation systems on the ruins of the war. The completion of the project helped realize the centuries-old desire for water of the farmers in South Phyongan Province.

The completion in October Juche 91 (2002) of construction of the Kaechon-Lake Thaesong Waterway covering nearly 160 kilometres brought about a radical turn in solving the problem of irrigation water in the western part of the country by using the water from the Taedong and Ryesong rivers.

Afterwards, the Paekma-Cholsan, Miru Plain and Chongchon River-Phyongnam irrigation waterways were completed, promoting the effort to perfect the irrigation system of the whole country.

To solve the problem of irrigation water for Hwangju Kindung Plain and its surrounding areas with inadequate water resources, the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un issued in March Juche 109 (2020) an order of the President of the State Affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to launch into a relevant waterway project and clearly indicated the specific orientation and ways for the project.

The project which started with the blasting of 100 000 cubic metres in June that year, was completed in December Juche 112 (2023). The Hwangju Kindung waterway was the sixth of its kind in the country’s history of the construction of large-scale gravity-fed waterways.

Having set the perfection of the overall irrigation system as a priority task in guaranteeing the stable development of agriculture, the DPRK is vigorously conducting grand nature-remaking projects to attain the goal of irrigation construction by 2025.
