On September 1, Juche 49 (1960), Chairman Kim Jong Il enrolled at Kim Il Sung University. That day he, together with some of his fellow students, climbed Ryongnam Hill where the university is situated.
He told them in the following vein: We should take charge of the Korean revolution and carry forward the cause of President Kim Il Sung from one generation to the next. This is an ennobling duty we assume before the times, revolution, country and people. Add glory to Korea, a great country, for all ages—this is my unshakeable faith and will.
Then he added that as he stood on the hill, he felt like composing a poem.
Fellow students asked him to compose a poem.
He recited a poem in reflection of his far-reaching plan to carry forward the revolutionary cause of Juche true to the President’s great idea.

Learning the leader’s great idea,
I will be the master of the revolution in Korea.
O Korea, I will add glory to thee.
…
As he finished his reciting, the students cheered loudly.
Looking around them, he said: I am not a poet. And I did not recite this poem because I wanted to improvise something. I only spoke openly, at the top of this hill and on this significant day, of what I have so far kept to myself.
He earnestly called on them to prepare themselves during university days as revolutionary talents who could take responsibility for the future of the country, thereby firmly supporting the great idea of the President.
Cherishing deep in mind the pledge he had made at Ryongnam Hill, he devoted his all to the country’s prosperity and the people’s happiness throughout his life.
The immortal classic work O Korea, I Will Add Glory to Thee gives a moving, earnest and ardent portrayal of Kim Jong Il ’s boundless loyalty to the cause of the Juche revolution pioneered by Kim Il Sung and his strong affection for his country and people. Later adapted into song, the poem still inspires many.
