The East and West seas of Korea are notably favourable for fish farming and offshore culture.
The East Sea of Korea has good conditions for aquatic farming in terms of water quality, depth, temperature and other aspects. Despite simple coastline and smaller number of islands, it has several bays, especially the East Korea Bay, with an agreeable environment for offshore culture. Influenced by Pacific high pressure, the waters are calm throughout the year. The tides are very gentle, with little change in salinity and affected by both warm and cold currents. These factors offer a variety of choices for offshore culture.
Scallop farming is ideal in the waters off Rason for their proper mean depth and sediment, while oyster farming is an option for the lagoon on the lower Tuman River.
Undaria pinnatifida can be cultivated in the waters off Hwadae County without a bay and adjourning rough seas where the water temperature stays below 17℃ and the waters are between 5 and 15 metres deep. Sea cucumber cultivation is recommendable in the coastal waters with a temperature of 14-20℃ and gentle waves.
The West Sea of Korea is also appropriate for aquatic farming.
It has a complex coastline with many bays and islands, large and small, along the coast and most of its bottom is part of the continental shelf, which offers favourable conditions for seaweed and oyster farming.
In particular, large rivers flowing into the sea carry a huge amount of sediment, enriching the sea bottom.
The sea is shallow and has a considerable water level difference due to its complicated landform. So the water temperature, salinity and distribution of food organisms periodically change, which provides one of favourable conditions for offshore culture.
With lower salinity and more plankton than the East Sea, it is suitable for farming clam, short neck clam, razor shell, ark shell, brown seaweed, laver, kelp and others.
Efforts are being made in the coastal cities and counties to develop aquatic farming to meet the characteristics of their localities.
