Songhung, located between Songhung-ri and Hothong-ri, Kimchaek, North Hamgyong Province, is a reservoir for irrigation purpose which was built by damming the Kalpha Stream, a tributary of the Rimmyong Stream.
The reservoir is surrounded by Mt Songhung (447m) covered mostly with pine forests and other mountains below 200m above sea level. At the lower side of it stretches an alluvial plain that came into being through sedimentation in the Rimmyong and Kalpha streams.
It covers 0.82㎢, and is 6.6㎞ in circumference, 2.1㎞ long and 0.4㎞ wide. And it sits long from east to west.
The main water source is atmospheric precipitation from the catchment area and underground water.
The Songhung hot spring, a simple radon spa, was found in 1692, and it wells up in 19 places but the amount of its components is almost the same everywhere.
The content of minerals of the hot spa applicable to medical treatment amounts to 281.53㎎/L, the radiation of its radon reaches 498.4Bq/L, and its major ions include bicarbonate ion, sulphate ion and sodium ion.
Its temperature is 46℃ and pH 8.4. The weather is affected by oceanic climate.
The alkali hot spring promotes blood circulation, metabolism, anti-inflammation, pain killing, sedation and endocrine gland and autonomic nerve control.
Around the hot spring there are Songhung Sanatorium and other health clinics.
