With the passage of time everyone grows older and older.
It will be a unanimous desire of the older people to make the rest of their lives worthwhile, rewarding and happy.
In the DPRK, the aging population lead a happy life thanks to the elderly care policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
The government remains steadfast in its people-oriented policies of taking full responsibility for the living and health of the senior citizens.
Accordingly, revolutionary forerunners such as war veterans and meritorious persons are enjoying good health and happy life while being provided with rights and interests as older persons.
Sanatoriums for war veterans built in all provinces are dedicated to those people who had fought at the risk of their lives to defend the country during the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953). Every year war veterans are invited there to meet their old comrades-in-arms and have a good time together with lavish hospitality.
Health centres for the elderly opened in Hwasong Street last year. They provide a range of services including fitness training, thermotherapy that uses the mud from the famous Lake Sijung and paraffin, and diet.
After enjoying table-tennis and dancing at multi-functional halls, seniors unanimously call them a “house that brings youth back”.
As the living environment of the aged improves and the older population increases, more policies are enforced to take care of them by protecting them, publicizing good experience of longevity and giving more social benefits to those above 90 years old.
This year alone, many centenarians received a birthday spread from the state. Among them is Kim Sang Jun, a woman living in Neighbourhood Unit No. 24 in Kalchon-ri, Hanggu District, Nampho Municipality.
Those with no one to look after them are living life to the full at old people’s homes that have been built in all parts of the country, amid public attention and commanding respect as revolutionary forerunners and seniors.
So, the older people in the DPRK are volunteering to do a good job to repay the benefits of the Party and state even a little.
