Phungsan is the national dog of the DPRK.
The Korean people love the native dog so much and widely use it in their life.
Phungsan dog shows take place in different parts of the country every year to widely promote the dog culture.
In November the National-dog of Phungsan Show-2024 was held at the Central Zoo. Among the participants was the family of Kim Son Suk from Sangmae-dong No. 2, Sariwon, North Hwanghae Province.
Each member of her family presented their respective dogs to the show, all of which looked agile, clever and reliable. Phungsan dogs keep calm when they are with their owners, but if strangers try to touch their owners’ things or make a menacing gesture, they instantly spring to alertness with a sharp eye to protect their owners.
At the show the dogs were acclaimed by the audience as they jumped over a number of obstacles and performed various movements at the signals of their owners.
Ok Jin Yong, director of the Animal Husbandry Institute under the Academy of Agricultural Science who was one of the jury, said that the dogs presented by Kim’s family were rated excellent in terms of their appearance, pedigree, body size, posture, movement and basic reflex action.
It is said that after work Kim and her husband, together with their son and daughter, always take time to look after their dogs. They take part in Phungsan dog show every year.
At present, Kim’s family raises 15 dogs. Every year they provide baby dogs to their neighbours and educational institutions.
Kim said that she is striving to increase the number of purebred species of Phungsan even though her locality is not the original home of the dog and, in the course of this, she has accumulated rich experience and made necessary equipment for breeding.
