Korean painting boasts a long history.
This is well evidenced by the mural paintings in the period of Koguryo (277 BC-AD 668), the first feudal state of Korea.
The mural paintings of Koguryo known as the cream in the early medieval fine art of Korea and paintings by Tamjing (579-631), a painter in the period of Koguryo, attest to the development and long traditions of Korean painting.
Rich in national sentiments and emotions of the Korean people, Korean painting is a powerful, beautiful and ennobling fine art style as it produces a vivid description of the reality with distinct, simple and delicate techniques.
Korean painting has several characteristic techniques such as composition by which objects are intensively portrayed and the single stroke by which lines, colours and tones are depicted in an easy and distinct manner.
The composition style is featured by deeply retaining the formative beauty and lifelike qualities unlike other types of fine art where drawing boards are filled to show the distance between objects.
The various techniques of Korean painting have developed century after century. Typical examples include Evening Glow over Kangson (1973), Red Glow over Lake Chon on Mt Paektu (1998) and Waves of Songgang (1999).
Dealing with a panoramic view of the then Kangson Steel Works, Evening Glow over Kangson enlists the traditional styles of Korean painting such as spread, linearism and single stroke to vividly represent waves, riverside and sky dyed in evening glow.
The Korean paintings Waves of Sea Kumgang , Mt Chilbo in Autumn , Tiger , Janggo Dance and When Balsam Is in Bloom are characterized by their soft yet beautiful colours and clear, simple and delicate styles. The first two works were awarded People’s Prize.
Each of the Korean painting techniques has its unique power of expression and forms an integral whole through an organic combination with each other.
