Tangun is a historical man who, by founding the first state named Joson on this land 5 000 years ago, pioneered the road to ancient civilization and performed great achievements for the Korean nation.
Since he founded the state, the Korean nation has demonstrated its dignity as a nation with a 5 000-year history and brilliant cultural traditions.
The Korean people have venerated him as the founding father of their nation and held memorial services for him to mark the National Founding Day (October 3 when he was born) at his mausoleum and shrines dedicated to him.
The memorial services for him have been held in various localities for thousands of years under different names, a typical example being the Memorial Service for Heavenly Lord.
Every year a memorial service is held on the occasion of the National Founding Day at the Tangun Mausoleum in Kangdong County, Pyongyang, which was renovated in 1993.
The memorial service was registered in the national intangible cultural heritage list.
