The basketball group of Kim Ju Hyok Senior Middle School in Mangyongdae District, Pyongyang, is well known across the country.
The fame is inconceivable without the group’s instructor Ri Song Nam.
When he was appointed the school’s basketball group instructor after graduating from Korea University of Physical Education, he began his work with acquainting himself with the group members. Their level was different from one another. He selected the students of suitable constitution and made exacting demands so that they could master basic movements.
Regularly showing them the videos of domestic and international games, he taught them how to choose the right position and possess, pass and throw the ball.
He encouraged them to build up team spirit and applied various training methods that suit the trend of development of the event.
As their abilities grew, he often organized matches with other schools to develop them in matches.
One year after his appointment, his group took the first place at a national schoolchildren’s sports event. Since then the group has maintained the winning record every year.
In August the group won the 2024 National Schoolchildren's Sports Games. It was the 15th victory of the group.
The group participated in the games on behalf of Pyongyang Municipality. They reached the finals, winning all the preliminaries. At the finals they competed with the North Phyongan provincial team known for good past records.
Both teams got the same score at every round. Just a minute before the end of the play-off No.3 of the Pyongyang team made a successful long-distance shot. Thus they won the match 43-40.
“I will try my best to maintain the honour of our school by making steady efforts to bring up reserve players,” said Ri.
