The Tongmyong Biotechnology Development Company has recently succeeded in growing a new species of calcium-rich plum tree and reaped the first fruits this year.
It was named black fruit calcium plum tree. It is of enormous economic value. The fruits are big. The outer skin is dark red and the flesh is cardinal.
With developed root system the tree grows fast. It is high in terms of soil fixation and resistance to drought. It survives dry soil and tends to grow in groups, so it can reduce the loss of soil and water.
The fruits are higher than any others in calcium content. In addition, they contain protein, vitamins, iron and sugar, as well as microelements and amino acids essential for human body.
For high rate of absorption in the human body it is highly effective for preventing osteoporosis among the elderly and growing children tall. As they contain natural calcium good for application and emit strong flavour, the fruits can be processed into various kinds of foods in the form of juice, wine, vinegar and milk. These foods can also be canned.
You can grow more than 6 600 trees and harvest 15 tons of fruits per hectare. Its leaves are of high medicinal value and its branches can be used to make handicrafts.
It is very useful for various afforestation purposes. The leaves are dark red. It grows up to the height of less than 1.5 metres. A good-looking plant with many twigs, it grows from spring to autumn. It presents peculiar natural landscape, when planted in several places in a group of 10 to 20 in combination with green plants.
The new species was highly appreciated at the national plants exhibition "Plants in DPRK-2024" held from late September to mid-October.
