Recently Han Kyong Il, an honoured disabled ex-soldier living in the township of Hamju County, South Hamgyong Province, and Ri Kum Jong, a girl from Pyongyang, got married.
A few months ago they came to know each other at a sanatorium in Kim Chaek City.
Ri was there to take care of her grandmother’s younger sister who was receiving medical treatment. One day she saw a young man on a wheelchair going about in the sanatorium compound with the help of others.
He was an honoured disabled ex-soldier who saved his comrades at the risk of his life when a sudden situation occurred during his military service.
That night she could not fall asleep.
She was once a soldier, too.
She grew up seeing her father fulfilling his duty as an army officer and her mother devoting herself to looking after soldiers.
For this reason she felt familiar to him.
From the next day she began to visit the young man’s room, and in those days she cherished respect for him and gradually fell in love.
And she finally decided to devote her whole life to that excellent young man.
After she came back home from the sanatorium, she told her mother what she was thinking, because she believed her mother would support her decision. But the mother dismissed the idea out of hand.
Fearful that her daughter might have made such a decision out of momentary impulse or vanity, her mother asked her daughter.
“Do you have any idea of how your decision would turn out? You’re too young to know all about life.”
Then, the daughter responded in tears; “I don’t know all about life. But what I know well is that any young man who unhesitatingly laid down his life for his comrades deserves to lead a life happier than anyone else in our society.”
The mother was deeply moved by what her daughter said.
“I think I have not brought you up in vain. Let’s go to see the young man after I discuss it with your father on business trip.”
Their wedding became a matter of concern of the bridegroom’s neighbours and all other people in the county. Many volunteered to contribute to preparing for the wedding.
Their warm sincerity made Ri feel keenly the true aspect of her socialist country.
On the wedding day she said to the guests:
“I am very happy now and I will be happy in the future, too. This is because we live under the socialist system in which love for our comrades is regarded as an honour and worth of life and pride of the times.”
