The DPRK, a country sea-girt on the east and west and with many coastal scenic spots, directs big efforts to making rational use of its rich coastal tourist resources.
The area suitable for coastal tourist activities (sea-bathing, sunbathing, air-bathing, fishing, yachting, boating, motorboat riding, water skiing, surfing, diving, etc.) is selected by taking into account the daily sunshine rate, sunshine hours, the number of days with an average daily temperature of 18-20°C, the number of days with little or no wind and the state of the seashore. In particular, a seaside area with sand beaches is favourable for coastal tourism. Many countries are proactive in developing such areas.
The coastal tourist areas take a large proportion of the natural tourist attractions in the world and most of the summer tourists are involved in coastal tourism activities.
In the DPRK, Songdowon, Lake Sijung, Majon and Ryongsupho, which have been famous as coastal scenic spots from olden times, are already used as coastal tourist resorts and the Wonsan Kalma coastal tourist area is now under construction on the east coast of Korea.
The Wonsan Kalma area has favourable conditions for coastal tourism.
The Kalma peninsula is a typical attached island which was formed by granite sand carried by the Namdae stream for a long time due to the action of sea waves, so a greater part of its coastline is smooth.
The centrepiece of the peninsula is Myongsasimni (named so as the sandy beach on the seashore of the peninsula looks exceptionally bright and stretches as long as four kilometres). A golden rain tree—a rare species in this area—is found at the entrance of the place and sweet briers grow in groups on the sandy beach. The red sweet briers on the beach, tall pine trees nearby and clear waters of the East Sea of Korea blend harmoniously, offering breathtaking scenery.
There is the modern Kalma Airport near the place. So the Wonsan Kalma coastal tourist resort is easy of access for tourists at home and abroad and can serve as an intermediate stopover between the residential areas as sources of tourists and tourist destinations and the tourist areas in the Wonsan-Mt Kumgang international tourist zone.
The DPRK is taking long-term measures to develop coastal tourist resources like those for sports-type tourism, rest-centred tourism and marine sightseeing tourism in a characteristic way.
