A winner of Kim Jong Il Prize and People’s Artist, PhD Kim Myong Un works as a creator at the Oil Painting Production Unit of the Mansudae Art Studio.
He often recollects his father Kim Min Gu (1922-2003), a famous painter who created oil painting Lake Chon on Mt Paektu in 1970 after visiting Mt Paektu (2 750m), the sacred mountain of the Korean revolution and the ancestral mountain of the Korean nation. The painting was the country’s first panorama of the mountain.
He used to tell his son Myong Un: If you are a painter of Korea, you should naturally know about the mountain and depict it.
This served as a source of spiritual strength which inspired Myong Un to create a lot of works related with the mountain. Therefore he has been called a “painter devoted to the artistic representation of Mt Paektu” all his life.
As Myong Un toured the mountain scores of times, he was deeply impressed by the majestic and imposing scenery, beautiful peaks and valleys and kaleidoscopic changes and primaeval forests of the mountain covered with snow in all seasons. This inspired him to create wonderful works of the mountain.
He is best remembered for oil paintings Mt Paektu Seen from Taeyonji Peak , Mt Paektu in June , Forests of Mt Paektu and Saja Peak of Mt Paektu .
Experts say his paintings are just like orchestral works for their excellence in terms of artistic depth, width and weight.
Many of his works won certificates and gold medals at international fine art exhibitions held in several countries like Australia, Germany and China.
His son Kim Ryo Won who graduated from Pyongyang University of Fine Arts works as a fine artist at his father’s production unit.
At the national fine art exhibition held in September in celebration of the 76th founding anniversary of the DPRK Ryo Won presented his oil painting Affectionate Father of Mothers across the Country , stealing the scene. The work is on the list of state’s collection.
Still Myong Un and Ryo Won devote themselves to the creative activities to portray the beauty of nature and human beings.
