Inscribed on the DPRK’s intangible cultural heritage list is horse riding which is related with the martial spirit of the valiant Korean nation.
Horse riding is a sporting event in which people compete in equestrian skills. Korea has a long history of taming horses. The Korean people had bred horses that could adapt themselves to the topographical conditions of their country with many steep mountains.
The good horsemanship of the Korean ancestors had been further developed as weapons handling and hurdle were added.
In the Korean history the people of Koguryo (277 BC-AD 668) were best at horse riding.
Horse riding requires warm-up, making friends with horses, mounting and dismounting, keeping standard sitting posture, walking, trotting and galloping.
Horse riding is highlighted by showing skills on horseback.
Riders keep standing on horseback, change position from the left to the right while holding the saddle with their hands, and drag feet while clinging to horse.
Today the Korean youth and working people enjoy leisure at the Mirim Riding Club and other horse riding facilities for physical training and health promotion.
