Viewing soldiers as his sons and daughters, Chairman Kim Jong Il (February 16, 1942-December 17, 2011) visited all the places where they were, however remote and difficult of access, and showed them his trust and affection.
Once, some commanding officers of the Korean People’s Army earnestly told him not to visit the frontline areas any more.
He told them: Now many of my sons and daughters are at the posts on the front line defending the country; I should inquire after their life during military service of standing guard on the front line and encourage them; to do so, I should visit the frontline areas.
He visited KPA units by crossing rough passes and seas and went round their barracks, mess halls, subsidiary food stores and wash rooms, showing parental care for the soldiers’ life.
After seeing the faces of coast artillerywomen whose faces were chapped by sea wind, he sent them medicinal creams, together with musical instruments, so that they could always live in an optimistic way. When he visited a KPA unit, he ensured that general officers took the place of soldiers on guard duties, so as to have a photo taken with all the soldiers of the unit.
Still vivid in the memory of the Korean people is the day when he travelled to Cho Island on board a small speedboat across the turbulent sea to meet the soldiers.
That day the seas were so rough that the cameramen accompanying him, unable to keep their balance, could not film his journey.
As he regarded soldiers as his sons and daughters, the KPA could develop into an invincible army with tremendous might.
