On November 13, 2000, Chairman Kim Jong Il (February 16, 1942-December 17, 2011) inspected the Youth Hero Motorway built as a monumental edifice of the era.
Feasting his eyes on the vast stretch of the motorway, his face beamed with satisfaction.
The 40-odd-kilometre-long motorway with tens of bridges between Pyongyang and Nampho was constructed by youth shock brigade members and soldier-builders in less than two years when the country was in the most difficult situation.
The Chairman had long conceived a plan to build the road.
He entrusted the huge project to young people, the most reliable and vigorous force of the Party.
Over 50 000 young people from across the country volunteered to work at the construction site.
He took measures to supply manpower, equipment and supplies to the project. And he saw to it that high official commendations were awarded to the young people who performed feats of labour, and sent gifts to them.
The young people, saying that they have nothing more to wish for than the Party’s trust and affection, successfully carried out the task given by the Party by displaying the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance and fortitude in the face of difficult working and living conditions.
Referring to the significance of the construction of the motorway for a good while, the Chairman said with pride that ours are a heroic young people, whom we can be proud of in front of the world and that gold cushion is not too much for these young people.
After a while, he continued: We should always treasure, love and give prominence to young people by adhering to the Party’s consistent policy of valuing young people, so as to train them to be stalwart reserves of the revolutionary cause of Juche. In order to hand down to posterity the feats of the builders of the Youth Hero Motorway, I had a medal struck to commemorate the construction of the motorway and named the motorway Youth Hero Motorway. I am going to have a monument to the young builders erected as an expression of our Party’s policy of valuing the youth.
