A conference for forming a democratic youth league was held in Pyongyang on January 16-17, 1946.
Shortly after Korea’s liberation from Japanese military occupation, Comrade Kim Il Sung (April 15, 1912-July 8, 1994) made a scientific analysis of the character and mission of the Korean revolution and the requirements of the development of youth movement in the country. On the basis of this, he advanced the policy of reorganizing the Young Communist League (founded on August 28, 1927) into the Democratic Youth League, a unified mass youth organization, and led the work for the preparations for its formation.
The conference was convened when full preparations were made.
At the conference attended by 47 representatives and hundreds of observers, a report on the work of forming the DYL was delivered, followed by provincial representatives’ reports on their work and speeches.
Then Kim Il Sung delivered a historic speech on the formation of the DYL, in which he clarified the necessity for forming a broadly-based, unified and democratic organization of young people and tasks of the DYL to be organized.
He also examined the programme and Rules of the DYL and all other documents adopted at the conference and indicated the structure of its central committee in detail.
On the 17th the conference proclaimed the formation of the DYL.
The conference served as an important occasion in encouraging young people from different social strata to join their effort to support the glorious revolutionary cause of Juche.
Later, the Democratic Youth League of Korea was renamed the League of Socialist Working Youth of Korea, the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League, the Kimilsungist-Kimjongilist Youth League and the Socialist Patriotic Youth League in the course of its development.
As the young people’s vanguard organization of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the only mass-based organization of young people, the youth league is on the highest level of building the organization of young people in the DPRK.
Taking it as its mission to carry on the revolutionary cause of Juche to accomplishment down through generations under the leadership of the WPK, the Socialist Patriotic Youth League works to train young people into dependable successors to the cause, rally them closely behind the Party and the leader and mobilize them to the endeavours to implement the Party’s lines and policies.
