In 2024 the DPRK recorded remarkable achievements to be recorded in its sports history.
The Korean sportspersons won over 20 trophies and more than 360 medals including 210-odd golds in international competitions and set more than 40 national records.
The women footballers successively won the AFC U-20 and U-17 Women’s Asian Cups, and the FIFA U-20 and U-17 Women’s World Cups, snatching four trophies in a year in an unprecedented success in the world of sports. The men footballers qualified for the AFC U-20 and U-17 Asian Cups to be held in 2025.
The weightlifters bagged 116 medals including 79 golds at the IWF World Championships, the IWF World Cup and the Asian Weightlifting Championships.
At present, the DPRK has 14 world records registered by the IWF in the name of its women athletes, ranking first in the country and regional standings, with three world records on the part of its male athletes.
Foreign media said the DPRK reigns as the world No. 1 weightlifting powerhouse, highlighting the results of the Korean weightlifters who renewed world records in a row and demonstrated their unparalleled abilities at the 2024 IWF World Championships.
Kim Kum Yong claimed the women’s singles title at the 2024 Asian Table-Tennis Championships, and Kim Kum Yong and Ri Jong Sik finished runner-up in the mixed doubles event at the 33rd Olympic Games.
Kim Ji Hyang and Ro Yu Chol triumphed at the 2024 Asian Wrestling Championships, and seven athletes including Han Chong Song and Son Il Sim topped the podium at the 37th CISM World Military Wrestling Championships.
The DPRK players proved themselves at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup, the EJU Gyor European Open 2024, and the women’s wrestling and women’s 10m platform synchronized events at the 33rd Olympics.
The men and women Taekwon-Doists bagged 15 trophies and 100-odd medals including 76 golds at the 10th Asian Taekwon-Do Championships and snatched a trophy and 19 medals, 10 golds among them, in the adult category at the 2024 World Cup Taekwon-Do Games of the Ninth International Martial Arts Games.
