Last year the metallurgical industry gained a firmer footing in iron production.
The Kim Chaek Iron and Steel Complex boosted the output of molten iron by raising the heating temperature through the renovation of a ladle-heating apparatus, and established a new desulfurization line to provide a guarantee for improving the quality of steel.
It also updated the iron production system by enhancing the capacity of a concentrate drying furnace and adopting a new method of simultaneous tapping and refining.
The Hwanghae Iron and Steel Complex, which built an energy-saving oxygen blast furnace and set up a heavy rail steel production line, developed an efficient desulfurizing agent to raise the rate of continuous casting and succeeded in curved plate continuous casting, making it possible to diversify the products in terms of kind and size.
The Chollima Steel Complex built a new combustion-pattern casting line, completed the construction of a smelting shop needed for assembling the continuous casting machine and installing a UHP electric arc furnace, and made progress in the construction of an electrode production base.
The Musan Mining Complex, which opened up a bright prospect for increased production with four rounds of 500 000-cubic-metre blasting, channelled efforts into raising the overburden removal capacity by technically improving large conical crushing grounds, long-distance conveyor belt and waste muck bin.
The Chongjin Steel Works ensured the stable operation of electric furnace by continuous charge and introduced a technique of preheating the pellets with waste gas from the rotary kiln, thus reducing the fuel consumption.
The Hungnam Electrode Factory added an impregnation process suited to the actual conditions of the unit, while the Posan Iron Works built a vertical furnace for oxidizing roasting pellets.
