Wetlands are a precious natural resource indispensable for the existence and sustainable development of mankind.
A wetland is an area of very wet, muddy land.
A relevant international convention stipulates that wetlands include water areas such as marsh, swamp, river and lake, coastal areas whose water level does not exceed six metres at ebb tide, and other zones with water—natural, artificial, perennial, stationary or moving.
Wetlands are regarded as a valuable resource essential for human life as they perform various important functions such as climate control, storage of water, flood prevention, degradation of pollutants and conservation of biodiversity.
They also provide humans with aquatic resources such as shellfish, shrimp and other fish and wild plants, as well as medicinal materials and minerals.
Several billion people around the world live relying on wetlands, which take a considerable share among the benefits mankind get from the natural environment.
According to recent information, however, 64% of the wetlands around the world has disappeared during the last century, and over 24 000 hectares of wetland are at risk every year.
Experts explain that the structure and functions of wetland ecosystem are severely affected by the competitive exploitation of water and land resources, transformation of rivers, lakes and coasts and environmental pollution, and some of them are being reduced to such an extent that they cannot be restored and that this gives rise to the destruction of wetlands.
The DPRK has a very developed wetland ecosystem as it abounds in rivers, namely Amnok, Tuman, Taedong and Chongchon, and wetlands like reservoirs, lakes and tidelands.
It directs major efforts to afforestation and other undertakings for wetland protection. In particular, it has set up wetland reserves in different places of the West and East seas of Korea to protect their ecological environment.
