Sin Yun Hyok, a Taekwon-Do practitioner hailing from Sunchon, South Phyongan Province, began his career at the then Taekwon-Do Team of the Sunchon Cement Complex after graduating from a senior middle school.
Sin entered the rankings at the 13th junior Taekwon-Do world championships in 2018. Afterwards, he was promoted to the Pyongyang Municipal Taekwon-Do Club and redoubled his training with a resolve to bring honour to the traditional martial art of the Korean nation on the world stage.
He won the men’s senior individual sparring event at the 10th Asian Taekwon-Do championships held in India in August last year and went on to cruise to victory in the men’s senior 92kg individual sparring event at the 2024 World Cup Taekwon-Do Games of the Ninth International Martial Arts Games held in November in Uzbekistan.
In every bout he overpowered his opponents by dint of his forte, receiving hearty applause from the spectators.
“Indescribable are the feelings when we, athletes, stand on the winners’ podium and look up to the national flag hoisted high in international competitions. For that moment we shed sweat on the training ground. As a Taekwon-Do practitioner, I’ll devote myself to defending and adding brilliance to the soul of the nation,” Sin said.
He is a fourth grader in Taekwon-Do.
