In May 2010 Chairman Kim Jong Il visited the Hyesan Shoes Factory in Ryanggang Province, a region situated in the northern part of the DPRK.
He was much pleased to look round the workplace which was kept in good order in all aspects and was bustling with production activities.
A wide variety of shoes, modern and convenient enough to meet the growing needs and tastes of the people, were rolling off the production line controlled by a computer system.
Following the production line, he made the rounds of workshops and checked every product made by the factory. He halted in front of different kinds of winter shoes. Among them a pair of padded boots with straps caught the eyes of everyone.
He picked up a boot and examined it carefully. For a good while, he didn’t take his eyes off the nameplate of the product: “Winter Boots for Forestry Workers.”
After the tour of the workplace, he said that the winter boots made by the factory would be favoured by not only forestry workers but also any other people living in cold areas, and proposed naming them “Ryanggang Province-made Winter Boots” as they are a speciality of the province.
He was so happy to know that a small regional-industry factory was making winter boots impeccable in shape and quality and supplying them to local people.
Before leaving the factory, he asked its officials to produce more nice winter boots for the good people and said he would buy a pair of them for himself when he was back there on a cold winter day.
