In April 1990 it came out that Chairman Kim Jong Il (February 16, 1942-December 17, 2011) would visit the April 15 Children’s Flower Garden in Pyongyang’s Kwangbok Street to plant trees.
Relevant officials ensured that holes were dug out and saplings were brought there.
Upon the arrival at the spot, Kim Jong Il said: This is not the way of planting trees. You will find tree-planting worthwhile and meaningful only when you dig out a hole and plant a tree by yourself. Once I went to Rungna Islet to plant a tree, and I myself made a hole, carried a tree on a pole and planted it. All of you here had better shovel earth and plant trees with students and members of the High-Speed Youth Shock Brigade.
When the tree-planting was at its height, some officials showed tendency to cut corners to finish the work early.
It caught the eyes of the Chairman. He stopped work to set it right. He reset the direction of a tree, saying it is needed to pour energy into planting even a single tree so that it can survive and grow healthy. He also gave a detailed explanation of how to plant trees, referring to the need to spread earth around the roots carefully lest they are hurt and water the trees after planting them.
That day, seeing him throwing himself into planting a tree on this land, the officials keenly realized again his ardent and ennobling love of the country.
