Kim Yong Ae living in Taeyang-dong, Sunan District, Pyongyang, is a simple, ordinary woman.
Kim was very young when her father and mother died. She grew up lonely under the care of her grandmother. After marriage, however, she found happiness in the warm affection of her husband and parents-in-law.
When she gave birth to her first child, her mother-in-law said: “You’d better have more children. Let's bring them up to be the pillars of the country. That's a duty of a citizen."
As a child, Kim was very envious of others who had brothers and sisters. Probably that is why she thought of having more children than others.
Hearing her mother-in-law’s request Kim came to realize again that it is the duty of a mother to give birth to many children and bring them up as pillars of the country and that patriotism starts to develop at home.
As a mother of four children, she was busy with farming but she did not neglect their education.
Kim was strict and principled in bringing up her children.
She used to teach her children that they should always respect elders and teachers, have good manners and set an example in their attire and appearance. And she ensured that they value and spare even a drop of water and a watt of electric power and pick up even an ear of grain on the road and carry it to the threshing place.
Whenever her children received new school uniforms and things according to seasons, Kim asked them in a tearful voice not to forget the great benevolence of the country. All of her three sons joined the army after finishing their senior middle school course.
When she heard about her sons being exemplary in military service, she felt an unusual sense of happiness and pride for having brought them up admirably for the country.
Last year, In Gyong, her fourth child and only daughter, chose to join the army after graduating from senior middle school. When her teacher and neighbours asked her if it would be better for her to stay with her mother, she answered proudly that it is the desire of her mother and the trait of her family to make all the children stand at the post of national defence.
Kim Yong Ae was awarded the Communist Mother Honour Prize in November last year in recognition of her admirable motherhood.
