During the general debate on Item 4 “Human Rights situations that require the attention of the Council” at the 58 th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council(UNHRC) on March 20-21, representatives from many countries denounced the West for abusing the human rights issue for their sinister political gains and called for the UNHRC to adhere to the principles of objectivity and independence, dialogue and cooperation in its work.

The representative of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), in his statement, sternly condemned the move of the hostile forces to mar the dignity and social system of the DPRK as an unpardonable politically-motivated provocation and infringement upon sovereignty. He noted that what require the primary attention of the UNHRC and OHCHR are the prevalent pitiful human rights situations of the United States and the Western countries.

Firmly opposing and rejecting the West’s attempts to take advantage of the UNHRC as a tool for interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states, he stressed that the UNHRC should regard impartiality and objectivity as the basic mission of its activities and shouldn’t tolerate the slightest practice of high-handedness and arbitrariness by a few specific countries and certain forces.

Representatives from many other countries including Russia, China, Iran, and Venezuela condemned and rejected the West’s acts of using the UNHRC as a weapon and tool for confrontation to pursue their geopolitical interests, interfere in others’ internal affairs and overthrow political systems.

They strongly called for an end to the politicization of human rights, habitual double-dealing practices and the Special Rapporteur mechanism, and urged the UNHRC to adhere to the principles of impartiality and objectivity, genuine dialogue and cooperation in its activities.
