Throughout his revolutionary career President Kim Il Sung (April 15, 1912-July 8, 1994) regarded the foreigners struggling for progress and prosperity as his brothers, and rendered unsparing support and assistance to them whenever they faced difficulties.
The people of Sri Lanka founded a republic in May 1972 after smashing the activities of the imperialists and reactionaries at home. But their struggle to create a new life was confronted with grave challenges.
The country inherited a fragile industrial foundation, and it had to import foods from other countries. It was a great challenge for the country as it was saddled with huge foreign debt.
In pursuit of a solution, the prime minister of the country made up his mind to send his son, an advisor to the government’s economic planning department, to President Kim Il Sung for help.
When he met President Kim Il Sung , he told the latter about the troubles his country was suffering from and his father’s request for help.
Kim Il Sung said: The prime minister’s request is an expression of his great expectations of us. We’d like to help you with all sincerity. We can assist you with the irrigation work as you fare badly in agriculture for lack of water. If you ask, we will send you relevant technicians and such equipment as pumping facilities.
The Sri Lankan was so delighted. The President added: If necessary, we will offer you tractors and trailer farm machines; our tractors operated poorly in warm regions in the past, but they have been improved and they will probably run well; and you’d better use those machines in farming.
“You have understood our troubles and settled the most troublesome issue for us. Thanks to your sincere help, our agriculture will be able to develop afresh,” said the Sri Lankan full of gratitude.
Other peoples in Asia, Africa and Latin America savoured true taste and joy of creating a new life under the unselfish assistance of the President. That is why they are still revering him as the dear father of mankind and the outstanding leader of the cause of independence of mankind.
