Kim Song Nam, who is in charge of technical affairs at the August 28 Youth Shock Brigade, obtained as many as five patents last year.
Of particular note in the career of the 48-year-old man is the fact that he served in the army for over 20 years.
While working in the shock brigade, not in a research institute, he came up with such innovative ideas to the admiration of experts.
His inventions are mostly household electric appliances.
“As the people’s living improves, the variety of household electric appliances increases,” said Kim Song Nam. “I majored in electrical engineering at Kim Chaek University of Technology. It is natural that I should want to see our people use fine home-made electric appliances.”
Kim’s motto in developing new products is energy saving, domestic production and supremacy in technology.
His products made their successful debut at the Intellectual Property Development Exhibition-2024 in October last year.
Among them are automatic thermostat water heater, safety connector, power-saving switch and standby power saver, which stole the limelight for their convenience, safety and low power consumption and drew many orders and contracts.
They are now growing in popularity among users.
“The automatic thermostat water heater is very good. With the heating and pumping parts integrated, it can be installed at kitchen, bathroom or any other places,” said a housewife.
“Less power is needed to heat tens of litres of water. Once heated, the water is kept warm for over 20 hours with no consumption of power, which means the availability of warm water almost around the clock,” another housewife said.
Many husbands have a high opinion of the safety connector and power-saving switch.
The safety connector has a completely-sealed power point and connector which prevent short-circuit risk even in contact with water and cause no electric shock even though touched by a finger.
The power-saving switch, unlike the ordinary ones with the wires embedded inside the wall, is simply installed on the wall with no wire. It operates remotely by a power-free relay attached to the bulb. So the current does not run to it when the light is on.
The patented products are favoured by families and industrial establishments alike. Several units have adopted them as part of their key products.
“I will try to develop more products favoured by the people this year, too,” said Kim Song Nam.
