Monggumpho, one of the scenic attractions in the DPRK, is located on the coast of the West Sea of Korea, some 12 kilometres from the seat of Ryongyon County of South Hwanghae Province.
The seaside resort is featured by a white sand beach, a green pine grove and red sweet briars, all blending in with each other.
Its weather is comparatively warm and it has less rainfall. It is heavily affected by the wind blowing from the sea.
The average annual temperature is about 10℃ and the average annual precipitation is about 1 000mm.
A variety of abrasion landforms and sand dunes go well with the sea. The sediments forming the sand dunes were created as the quartzite layer of the formation of Mt Jangsu was eroded by the sea. Its sand is known as one of the best quartz sand at home and abroad.
The sand beach sprawls over 2 km to the south and about 8 km from the east to the west, and the resort covers an area of 20 square kilometres.
The sea off the resort is home to tortoises and seals, as well as shrimps, crabs, shellfish and seaweeds.
The seaside scenery and exquisitely-shaped rocks are particularly spectacular.
An eye-catcher is the Khokkiri Rock.
The felsite rock eroded by sea water and wind resembles an elephant drinking with its trunk reached out to the water, hence the name of it.
It is about 15 metres high and 10 metres long, with its “trunk” 3 metres round. And the rock is on the national list of natural monuments.
Monggumpho has turned into a leading tourist destination.
