June 17 is Desertification and Drought Day.
Every year the day serves as an important occasion for raising public awareness of desertification, land degradation and drought and solving these issues.
Land, the main means of agricultural production and the cradle of human life, is gradually turning into desert due to global warming, natural environment destruction caused by excessive economic activities and other reasons.
The Secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has set “Restore the land, Unlock the opportunities” as the theme of the 2025 Desertification and Drought Day (DDD) and called upon all signatory nations to turn out to restore 1.5 billion hectares of degraded land by 2030.
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea pays close attention and directs great efforts to the work to protect and manage land, a valuable asset.
In keeping with the changing reality, it has amended and supplemented the law on land, the law on forest and other relevant laws several times to consolidate the legal guarantee for protecting land and making effective use of it.
In spring and autumn every year it makes nationwide efforts to plant trees in a scientific way according to weather and soil conditions of the given regions and relations of symbiosis. This spring alone, more than two hundred millions of trees have been planted.
The agricultural sector has developed and widely introduced protective farming methods such as cultivation technique of mulching the soil with biodegradable paper and soil improvement agents effective in the improvement of soil fertility, thereby steadily increasing agricultural production.
The work to build or repair waterways and underground water facilities and other projects to complete the irrigation system of the country are in full swing and irrigation facilities such as barrages and pumping stations are operated in a scientific way.
Besides, great efforts are directed to water control projects such as river improvement, erosion control, and construction and repair of sea dykes to protect soil from flooding and restore farmland that was washed away.
