The Taedong School for Children with Visual Impairment is situated in the Wau Workers’ District, Taedong County, South Phyongan Province of the DPRK.
In the school, students are divided into primary, junior and senior classes. More state benefits are given to them than normal children.
The headmistress of the school is Pak Hong Sil, a meritorious person of socialist patriotism and a Merited Teacher who has been working for the education of disabled children for more than 50 years.
According to her, the school was established more than 60 years ago.
In those days the country’s economic situation was difficult because the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953) was just over. But the country set up educational institutions for the disabled across the country.
The school gives education to children with visual impairment in the western part of the country.
Like the primary and middle schools for orphans in all other parts of the country, students of the school are supplied with new school uniforms, school things, satchels, shoes, confectionery, fish, meat, fruit, etc, according to seasons.
The school has more than 40 students and 26 teachers. Among the teachers there are Merited Teachers, holders of academic degrees and model teachers.
The notebooks and textbooks used by visually impaired people are made with a special kind of paper so that braille points printed on it will not be ruined easily. The country sends them textbooks and notebooks prepared with great efforts. It has set up a separate publishing house for persons with visual impairment so as to provide them with novels, common knowledge books and other materials conducive to their education and edification.
The students of the school are also provided with braille boards and pencils.
At the school, they learn to play more than one musical instrument such as the piano, accordion, guitar and percussion instruments according to their aptitudes.
That’s why they always say that they see the benevolent image of the motherland and their future when they will grow more beautiful in the embrace of the country.
