Ssangmujigae Peak volcano is one of the geological sites in the Mt Paektu area registered as a global geopark.
The volcano, 2 626m above sea level, is located east of Lake Chon or about 0.8km north of Hyangdo Peak volcano.
The peak is named so since a double rainbow often occurs above it in a rare natural phenomenon.
The low saddle between Ssangmujigae and Hyangdo peaks is a place through which to climb up and down the lakeside and the ridges nearby, giving an only passage to bears inhabiting the area.
The lower part of the volcanic body underlies a pyroclastic talus and the upper part is composed of layers of breccia, yellow tuff, pumice and rhyolite.
The volcano was built by four small eruptions after the overlying by the Pukphothaesan Member, ending with sulphide-containing rocks formed with ramified eruption.
White pumice covers the summit and the slope to a thickness of some one hundred metres.
Among volcanoes nearby it is the only one whose summit is preserved.
