Recently the Pyongyang Tannery has remarkably lowered the production cost by giving priority to science and technology.
Until a few years back it had to depend on imported chemicals for tanning.
For example, the sulfate oil that makes leather flexible and soft accounts for 10% of the raw materials for its production, compelling it to import tens of tons of the oil every year. It held the development of the chemical on its own as a key to production growth and directed much effort to that end.
In the course of this, it developed a substitute for the oil made with the byproduct from fish processing. By using the substitute, it turned out leather products that meet national standards in all its qualitative indices such as soft touch, elasticity and resistance to water and light.
Besides, the factory developed a substitute for chrome sulfate for re-tanning.
The achievements contributed to cutting the funds for the import of chemicals by far and laying the foundations for increasing output.
