Irrigation projects rounded off for more than 160 000 hectares of paddy fields planned for this year

Thanks to the devoted efforts of officials and working people across the country, the irrigation projects for some 160 000 hectares of paddy fields have been carried out, including the construction and repair of some 1 300 pumping stations, the construction and overhaul of irrigation structures in over 1 100 places and repair of 17 000 kilometres of waterways, and more than 3 300 hectares of dry fields have turned into paddies.
South Hwanghae Province, the main granary of the country, pressed ahead with the irrigation projects for paddy fields.
It removed over 350 000 cubic metres of earth, built embankments and carried out 20 000-odd cubic metres of concrete placing for the Lake Jangsu-Ongjin, Kangnyong, Lake Pongchon-Chongdan and Lake Kuam waterways, thus remarkably increasing the water passing capacity.
North Phyongan Province concentrated its manpower and means on major projects including the repair of draining gates of Taegye Island to achieve good results.
It built ten pumping stations at the terminal sections of the first and second stages of Honggondo tideland to sufficiently irrigate over 1 000 hectares of paddies where farming was hindered due to water shortage, and wound up in time the construction and repair of hundreds of pumping stations.
North Hwanghae Province carried out the concrete placing for the bed of the Miru Plain Waterway and pushed on with the readjustment and reinforcement of irrigation facilities.
Sariwon City and Hwangju and Yonthan counties carried out concrete placing for some kilometres of earth canal to increase water passing capacities, and the province completed the construction and repair of irrigation structures in more than 100 places ahead of schedule.
Nampho Municipality finished its waterway project in the shortest possible period and rounded off the construction and repair of over 200 pumping stations.
Officials and working people of Pyongyang Municipality and Kangwon and South and North Hamgyong provinces also built and repaired relevant structures and facilities to make a breakthrough for this year’s farming.
