The Pyongyang Grand Theatre is a monumental structure on the bank of the picturesque River Taedong.
It makes an active contribution to the cultural and emotional life of the people and the development of stage art of the country.
The theatre boasting of the excellent architectural style of the nation has all conditions necessary for art creation, performance and appreciation ranging from over 1,200-seat auditorium, stage, latest acoustic and lighting equipment, practice rooms and makeup rooms to public service facilities.
Guide Paek Hyon A said the magnificent Pyongyang Grand Theatre boasting of the excellent architectural style of the nation with the roofs of Korean style has served as a base for the cultural and emotional life of the people and as an edifice of the Juche-oriented stage art for a long time and it is associated with the warm love of the great leader Kim Il Sung, and continued:
"The great leader Kim Il Sung looked ahead into the future of triumphant country already during the Fatherland Liberation War in the 1950s. He examined the master plan for postwar rehabilitation and construction and unfolded a plan to build a wonderful theatre of Korean style in the centre of Pyongyang.
After the war, he chose its site in person and gave concrete instructions on its design and direction of construction. He called at the construction site several times and led the theatre to be built into a cultural edifice for the people.
On May 30, 1960, he gave field guidance to the theatre under construction at the final stage again. He said time and again that as the grand theatre we build is an edifice of art for the people, it should be built well into a monumental structure of the era of the Workers' Party according to the demand of the people and for their convenience."
Kim Il Sung named it Pyongyang Grand Theatre and personally cut the inauguration tape in August 1960.
A number of revolutionary operas including "The Sea of Blood" and many art works were performed at the Pyongyang Grand Theatre.
The April Spring Friendship Art Festival and many other international festivals were also held there.
The Pyongyang Grand Theatre was remodelled in 2009.
