Jonwi Street is located in the Sopho area, the northern gateway to the capital city of Pyongyang. The name of the street honours the Korean youth.

The new street of the people built by Korean youth symbolizes the development and future of socialism.

Skyscrapers and high-rise apartment houses of various styles including an 80-storey apartment building and public buildings line up along the broad avenue.

In retrospect, 2023 was a stirring year in which not only the project for building dwelling houses in the Sopho area and the second-stage project for building 10 000 flats in the Hwasong area but also the construction of the Kangdong Combined Greenhouse Farm were launched all together in the capital city.

At the Sixth Plenary Meeting of the Eighth Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un , taking housing construction for the people as the foremost policy task, proposed building a new street in the Sopho area apart from the construction of 10 000 flats in Pyongyang in 2023, and entrusted the project to the Socialist Patriotic Youth League and the Paektusan Hero Youth Shock Brigade.

At the groundbreaking ceremony for building the street in the Sopho area held in February 2023, he delivered a rallying speech calling for waging a courageous struggle for the eternal prosperity of the socialist state and the capital city. And he named the street Jonwi and saw to it that the project was prioritized and pushed forward as a national undertaking.

In hearty response to his call, more than 100 000 young men and women across the country volunteered to work for the building of the new street.

The young builders worked undauntedly in the face of such challenges as waist-deep mud, giant bedrocks and mire that swallowed up even an excavator. They fully demonstrated the might of the young vanguard in building the framework construction of dozens of high-rise and super-high-rise apartment buildings.

In particular, those in charge of the 80-storey tower completed the framework of one storey in 14 hours by doing the assembly of reinforcement bars, shuttering and concrete tamping in a three-dimensional way. As a result, the framework construction of the 220-odd-metre-high skyscraper with a total floor space of over 146 000 square metres was completed ahead of schedule.

In addition, young working people and students in Pyongyang came to the construction site every evening to render voluntary assistance. Throughout the period of the project they numbered over 1 100 000 in total.

Thus, in a little over a year, Korean young people successfully built a large architectural group composed of more than 4 100 flats and many public buildings in the Sopho area.

In May 2024, Kim Jong Un attended the inauguration ceremony of Jonwi Street, a grand monument to youth representing the future of the country. At the ceremony he said that the cause of building a powerful socialist country is sure to emerge victorious as the country has a huge army of young people who are faithful to its call, honest with society and the collective and devoted to the future.
