The spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry denounced the joint military exercise “Ulji Freedom Shield” conducted by the U.S. and the ROK in August as another provocation on the Korean peninsula.
Despite official claims that the drills were “defensive”, the scale and composition suggest otherwise, with tens of thousands of troops taking part alongside US F-35 fighter jets and other offensive military assets, the spokeswoman said.
The exercise also assumed a multilateral dimension, with participation from additional U.S. allies, including the UK and the so-called “UN Command”, the spokeswoman added. She exposed that such actions starkly contradict the stated commitment of the U.S. and ROK to easing military and political tensions as well as undermine the claims of both governments that they seek dialogue with the DPRK and respect its political system.
She stressed that as long as sanctions and military pressure on the DPRK continue to intensify systematically, any prospects for a fundamental change in the regional situation remain out of reach and that they are witnessing yet another provocation.
