Hwawon Senior Middle School No. 1 in Hwasong District, Pyongyang, runs a fine art group as part of its efforts to cultivate students’ talent.
The school admits those with an aptitude for fine art to the group and offers them basic education.
The group helps the members digest what they have learned in class and develop their practical abilities with a better understanding of the techniques and means of description peculiar to fine art such as tone, line drawing and colouring.
With a focus on sketching, it teaches them how to perceive things in a three-dimensional way, how to analyse and compare them and how to make a unified consideration of them as a whole, helping them improve their abilities for observation and formative description.
It frequently organizes outdoor drawing sessions.
Students travel around the city visiting scenic sites, modern streets and monumental edifices to have a clear and vivid idea of things in the real world. In the course of this, they produce refined works in terms of formative art, detail and portrayal.
The group makes a point of holding the show of works of the members to help them share experience and promote the spirit of inquiry.
As a result, group members have entered the rankings at the works contest of schools in the district and won diplomas at different annul national events related to sculpture, craftwork, sketch and calligraphy.
Ri Kyong Ryong, a third-year student of the junior course at the school, presented a paper craftwork “Ideal Street of People” to the Sixth National Sculpture and Craftwork Festival held in September to celebrate the 77th founding anniversary of the DPRK. His work was highly appreciated.
