This year farms in Mangyongdae District, Pyongyang, have adopted a soilless substrate-based rice seedling production method, yielding good results.
Unlike in the past, the method does not require soil for growing rice seedlings. Instead, it allows seedlings to grow on the substrate mainly made of rice chaff fermented with quick complex microzymes. This approach arouses growing interest in the agricultural sector as it allows for healthy production of seedlings without great investment and high yields with easier farm work.
According to the method, soilless substrate is to be placed on the bottom of the seedling box and sprinkled with water before sowing the seeds and covering them with additional substrate.
Only a space is needed to adopt the method.
This obviates the need for the intricacies of making seedbeds with lots of soil and other materials every year, saving much labour and farming materials. And there is no need to weed, either.
The quick complex microzymes used for the production of soilless substrate transform any organic sources into plant growth promoter in a short period of time.
The rice seedlings growing on soilless substrate are very healthy with higher germination rates and more leaves than those in the edaphic seedbeds. When grown up and transplanted on paddy fields, they develop more and deeper roots.
Moreover, they strike roots well after transplantation.
In all, this approach offers prospects of putting the industrialization of seedling production onto a higher level.
