During the recent APEC summit, the Japanese prime minister met a senior official of Taiwan, which she immediately made public. In this regard, the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry noted that such acts run counter to the one-China principle and the basic norms of international relations and send wrong signals to the forces seeking Taiwan’s independence. The spokesperson urged Japan, the country with unavoidable historical responsibility for Taiwan issue, to be prudent with its words and stop interfering in China’s internal affairs.
In response to the protest from the Chinese side, the Japanese foreign minister made such a lame excuse in person as to the effect that the meeting of a Taiwanese authority by the Japanese prime minister during the APEC Summit is just customary and does not go against the Japan-China Joint Statement.
Even before the inauguration of the current prime minister, Japan kept provoking China, referring to Taiwan as a “dear friend” and sending an autograph letter of the prime minister to the Taiwanese authority by the delegation of its Diet members to Taiwan. Recently Japan has conferred an order on a Taiwanese official advocating Taiwan’s independence.
Japan is using the Taiwan issue as a leverage for taking sides with the U.S. in the implementation of “Indo-Pacific Strategy”, a tool for attaining its own politico-diplomatic goals. Such behavior of Japan will only cause security concerns in the region and discord between nations.
