The international community continues to raise its voice against the ever-conspicuous moves of the U.S. for space militarization.
On October 27, a thematic debate on Outer Space was conducted at the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) of the 80 th Session of the UN General Assembly. During the discussion, Russia expressed concerns over the increasing risks of outer space being turned into a bridgehead of war and aggression owing to the strategy of the Western countries to deploy weapons in outer space. It explicitly referred to the U.S. Golden Dome initiative the contents of which are the comprehensive development of missile defense elements including on-orbit interceptors.
It also called for a substantial prevention of an arms race in outer space through the establishment of a legally binding comprehensive set of rules that prohibits any weapons deployment and attacks against space objects.
China, too, denounced the U.S. for its Golden Dome initiative and the development and deployment of space-based weaponry as dangerous acts that transforms outer space into a domain for warfare. It continued that the U.S. is not only passive but also obstructs the Open-Ended Working Group on the Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space (PAROS).
Numerous other participants underlined the exclusive use of outer space for peaceful purposes, and rejected and denounced the moves for its militarization.
Outer space is a common asset of humankind. The moves of the U.S. to transform it into a domain for warfare is fraught with dangers of starting an arms race in outer space and pushing the entire world into the flames of a terrible war.
