It has been 11 years since the afforestation campaign started in the DPRK.
The period has witnessed a great progress in the greening efforts.
Modern tree nurseries have been built across the country.
Tree Nursery No. 122 was built into a model and standard of the country’s tree nurseries, a nursery with an annual production capacity of over 20 million saplings built in Kangwon and North Hamgyong provinces, respectively, with similar production bases effective in labour and land utility put into operation in North Phyongan, South Phyongan, North Hwanghae and other provinces. The Central Tree Nursery under the Ministry of Land and Environment Protection was remodelled, and city and county tree nurseries built up their material and technical foundations, seeing a year-on-year increase in sapling production. As a result, the nationwide sapling output has more than doubled compared to that before the start of the afforestation drive.
Amid dynamic efforts to create useful forests, hundreds of thousands of hectares of wild-fruit tree forests were created across the country as of last year.
Mundok and Thaechon counties were the first to win the title of the model county in afforestation, and at least 10 000 units have been awarded the title of the Forest of Socialist Patriotism. And the introduction of agroforestry and other valuable forestry sci-tech achievements has greatly helped enhance the utility rate of forest land.
