Shuttlecock game is played by kicking the shuttlecock to perform various stunts or compete to kick it more than others.
As one of the folk games favoured by boys, it was mostly played in winter.
It emerged in the period of Koguryo (277 BC-AD 668).
Tongguksesigi , an old book about the annual events and folk customs in Korea in the first half of the 19th century, reads that the shuttlecock looks to be a large lead and it is topped with pheasant feathers and that two persons compete to flex their leg muscles, standing against each other and trying to kick the shuttlecock in a row lest it falls on the ground.
The shuttlecock varied in shape according to historical periods.
The most widely used shuttlecock in modern times was an old brass coin with a hole in the middle or iron piece tied with a tuft of coloured thread, wool or cloth.
The shuttlecock was kicked upward by the inner side of one foot, consecutively landing on the ground while the balance was kept by the other. There were also throwing the shuttlecock by the instep after upward kicks and going to and from a place while keeping kicking the shuttlecock.
The game is played by individuals or in groups.
Good for concentration, judgement of the falling of an object and physical training, the game is still fondly played by children and students.
