DPRK Speeds Up Aerospace Development

Date: 07/02/2026 | Source: Naenara (En) | Read original version at source

On February 7, 2016, the DPRK launched an earth observation satellite Kwangmyongsong 4 and put it into its designated orbit.

The successful launch was a legitimate exercise of the country’s independent right to outer space use for peaceful purposes and an epochal event in boosting its science and technology and economy.

In the past the DPRK successfully launched artificial earth satellites on several occasions as part of its efforts to develop the national economy and improve the quality of its people’s life under a grand goal for building a powerful socialist country.

The country’s space exploration entered the stage of practical use after its successful launch of an artificial earth satellite Kwangmyongsong 3-2 in December 2012.

With this as a momentum, the country intensified the efforts to further enhance the independence and Juche orientation of its space industry, with the result that the material and technical foundations of the space exploration sector was cemented further.

In August 2022 it amended and supplemented the law on the development of aerospace to provide a legal framework for building up the space industry at a higher rate.

It stepped up the work for introducing application technologies into the build-up of the economy and national defence and the improvement of the people’s living standards, as it made satellites multi-functional and high-performance and solved many technological problems related to satellite control and operation in its own way.

It speeds up efforts for space development under the unified guidance of the government.

Efforts are going on to apply space sci-tech achievements in various sectors including agriculture, fisheries, meteorological observation, communications, resource exploration, land administration and disaster prevention by actively developing practical satellites for weather observation, earth observation and communications.

Seminars on space science and technology have been regularly held to consolidate the successes made in the field of space science and technology, and efforts are being made to pioneer new fields of key importance in space development and use.

The Aerospace Science Faculty of Kim Il Sung University and other faculties and departments related to outer space at higher education institutions are training their students into reserve talents possessed of high creative ability who can do their part in developing the country’s space industry.
