The DPRK abounds in resources of climatotherapy as well as those of mineral water and hot spring. The climatotherapy resources include areas with healthy climate and weather and climatic elements concerning seasons and areas.
Every province has a number of areas suitable for climatotherapy, including the Mangyongbong spring water area in Pyongyang, the Yangdok hot spring area in South Phyongan Province and the Kyongsong hot spring area in North Hamgyong Province.
The climatic zones of the DPRK can be divided into mountainous, coastal and lowland zones according to geographical, weather and climatic features.
A typical mountainous climatic zone is the Samjiyon area in Ryanggang Province, northern part of the country. This area is very beneficial to human health for its beautiful scenery and unique climatic conditions. In particular, it is very good for those vulnerable to respiratory disorders as it is open to solar radiation and abundant in vegetation. The proper use of mountain climate can result in some improvement of ischemic heart disease, arteriosclerosis, hypertension (stage 1), hypotension, chronic bronchitis, secondary anemia, chronic hepatitis, and central nervous system disorder, according to experts.
The coastal climate of the country is featured by beautiful natural environment and clean air rich in chlorine, iodine, bromine and some other mineral salts, which provides favourable conditions for relieving fatigue, restoring endocrine function and preventing and treating chronic inflammatory diseases of the upper respiratory tract.
The repeated inhaling of the sea air causes constant stimulation to strengthen the airway mucosal cells and helps enhance resistance to infections by common cold, laryngitis and pharyngitis.
The warm and dry lowland climate promotes evaporation out of the body to help treat urinary and metabolic diseases.
The climate of the DPRK is so varied that people can choose a healthy climatic zone of their own according to seasons.
Today, the climatotherapy resources are making a positive contribution to the promotion of the people’s health.
