Shortly ago, a staff reporter visited Pyongyang Primary School No. 4 where she happened to enjoy a performance given by the Pyongyang Puppet Theatrical Troupe on tour.
The teachers and students of the school were out to warmly welcome the creators and other artistes of the troupe as they entered the campus with puppets in their hands.
Over the past 60-odd years since its founding, the troupe had put scores of plays and short works on stage, contributing to the cultural and emotional life of the people.
Soon the performance started.
Puppet play “Concert by our KCU sub-branch organization” was enthusiastically acclaimed by students as it vividly delineated their school life.
Another centrepiece that drew the interest of not only students but also teachers was short work “ Janggo dance.” In the work a puppet dressed in traditional Korean trousers and jacket danced to the tune of cheerful music, playing the janggo (traditional Korean musical instrument) and twirling a long white ribbon attached to its hat.
The performance was so lifelike and interesting that some audacious students, prompted by curiosity, sneaked to the stage and touched the puppets while the performance was going on. And some other students imitated the puppets, dancing to the tune of music.
“As fairy tales are re-presented in puppet play, children like it very much,” said Kim Ok Gyong, a department chief of the school. “While watching puppet play, they learn a lot of things and feel an impulse to try to make puppets by themselves.”
The troupe often barnstorms the institutions where children live and study like the Pyongyang Baby Home, Pyongyang Orphanage, Changgwang Kindergarten, Kyongsang Kindergarten, Kim Song Ju Primary School and Pyongyang Primary School for Orphans.
Han Min Gyong, a section chief of the troupe, said that while seeing the lively children and hearing their merry laughter during their performances in such institutions, not at theatres, the creative workers of the troupe often come across the ways of how to perform as better suited to the psychology of children.
