Situations of Women’s Rights as Different as Chalk and Cheese

Forty-two years have passed since the adoption of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women at 34 th session of UNGA in December 1979. However, the U.S., the UK and other Western countries are evoking ridicule and condemnation from the world as their acts of violating women’s rights reach the phase beyond imagination.

Recently, a horrid thing happened in the vicinity of a bustling shopping center of New York city, U.S. A woman, forcing an Asian American woman to put off her mask, injured her after hitting her head several times with a hammer.

When the UN-Women released a survey early this year that 97% of women aged between 18 to 24 either have suffered or are suffering sexual violence in the UK, millions of enraged women staged the “March of the 97%” in this country in April.

Following the barbarous rape of a 12-year-old girl that sent shock waves throughout the world, another cruel incident occurred in this country; a policeman arrested a woman in broad daylight on a charge of breaking the rules, dragged her in handcuffs to a forest away from the city center, committed sexual violence against her and then burned her corpse to ashes.

Such cases showing the plight enforced upon women in the Western countries advocating for “freedom” and “human rights” are only the tip of the iceberg.

Some time ago, an international conference was held to discuss the human rights issue. At that time, more than 100 countries strongly denounced the U.S. for turning its back on the human rights conventions including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and refusing to ratify them. This fact alone makes one easily understand that crimes of violating women’s rights are being perpetrated in the U.S. under tacit approval and encouragement from the government.

Then, where is the country that provides women with genuine human rights?

Our country, having adopted and effectuated the Law on Gender Equality in 1946, signed the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and is now implementing faithfully all the obligations under it. It is also seeking a close cooperation with international organizations in the field of protecting and promoting the rights and health of women.

An ordinary female worker is elected as a deputy to the Supreme People’s Assembly where the state affairs are being discussed and mothers with many children are awarded with the highest honour of a citizen of the country – the title of Labour Hero – this is none other than the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Women who delivered triplets and quadruplets are given the privileges such as having a doctor in charge of their family health, receiving free of charge dwelling houses, medical supplies, foodstuffs and household goods, and the state shoulders the full responsibility for the growth of triplets and quadruplets while protecting their lives and health in accordance with the medical checkup and health care system.

The U.S. and other Western countries would be well-advised to pay due attention to the dismal human rights situation of their own countries where numerous women fade away in destitute as victims of social evils before they find faults with others over their “human rights” situation. They should also put an immediate end to their vicious acts to cover up their defects with the signboard of “human rights”.
