Discord within the European Union deepens as some members stated that they will block any new EU sanctions against Russian banks and energy supply enterprises that damage the country’s interests.
Politico EU wrote that the EU is currently working on a package of measures against Russia, the 18 th one since the outbreak of Ukrainian war, yet the opposite stand of Slovakia will pose difficulties for its adoption.
Politico EU mentioned that the Slovak parliament approved a resolution calling on its government not to vote in favor of new EU sanctions on Russia and quoted the remarks of Slovak Prime Minister in a televised news conference, saying Slovakia will block any European Union sanctions against Russia that damage the country’s interests and he considers the parliamentary resolution a strong political tool that he will be able to rely on. Politico EU underlined that this is a clear expression of the current administration’s stand.
It also referred to the fact that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, an extreme rightist leader, repeatedly warned of blocking additional EU sanctions on Russian energy industry, which would require an unanimity of 27 member states, and commented that the EU faces challenges in adopting a new sanctions resolution against Russia.
